Founded By Richelieu Dennis, Nyema Tubman, Mary Dennis in Harlem, New York City, New York, United States
Nubian Heritage is shea butter based personal care brand born on the streets of Harlem in 1992. Liberian friends Richelieu Dennis and Nyema Tubman, later joined by Mary Dennis, started selling soaps made from family recipes for African black soap and shea butter. Unable to return home after civil war, they built small batches for local customers who wanted better options for textured skin and hair.
The brand message centers on “ancient wisdom, modern wellness,” using natural and certified organic ingredients in culturally authentic ways. Product lines include bar soaps, body washes, lotions, scrubs, oils, and aluminum free deodorants. Nubian Heritage sources fair trade shea butter directly from cooperatives in West Africa and supports community commerce initiatives that reinvest in education and infrastructure. Today the brand reaches grocery, natural, and drug retailers across the United States while keeping focus on traditional remedies, high ingredient integrity, and inclusive beauty.
